British Anchor Pottery Co. Ltd

The British Anchor Pottery Co. Ltd was established in 1884 and was named after its location on Anchor Road, Longton, Staffordshire.

The company was forced to close the Anchor Road works during World War Two, but was able to use the facilities of the nearby J & G Meakin works during this period.

They resumed business at Anchor Road after the end of the war, and in 1961 launched their famous ‘Hostess Tableware’ brand.

In 1970, The British Anchor Pottery Co. was merged with Thomas Poole & Gladstone China Ltd after being acquired by the Gailey Group Ltd. This merger formed a new subsidiary called ‘Hostess Tableware Ltd’, which continued to be produced at the Anchor Road site.
