This is a stunning, handmade studio pottery jug by William Fishley Holland (Senior).
The jug has a flared rim and a pinched spout. The pot-bellied body widens out before tapering in again towards the base. This has a flattened discoid edge. A strap-like handle is attached below the rim and again at the widest point of the body.
The interior is glazed in a pale turquoise shade. The exterior is decorated with two pairs of stylised leaping fish, with their details being incised into the pottery. There are also incised ripples below the fish and between the two motifs. These motifs have been glazed in the same pale turquoise blue as the interior; the remainder of the body is glazed in the classic Fishley Holland mottled-grey shade.
The underside of the jug is crudely finished and incised in the centre with the initials ‘WFH’. This is the signature of William Fishley Holland (Senior).
It has a height of approximately 19.8cm, with a width across the rim of about 10.3cm and across the base of about 8.4cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 700g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is fine crazing to the glaze all over.
