James Broadhurst & Sons ‘Renaissance’ Design Ceramic Trio by Kathie Winkle

This is a retro cup, saucer and side plate ‘trio’ from the ‘Renaissance’ suite, designed by Kathie Winkle for James Broadhurst & Sons.

The cup is approximately cylindrical, tapering in at the base. The handle is of plain, looped form. It is transfer printed with a geometric motif consisting of large and small circles containing various patterns, that alternate with a double scroll and diamond pattern in black. The underside of the cup is impressed with the word ‘ENGLAND’.

The saucer is of discoid form with a central cup ring. It is transfer printed with a double scroll and diamond motif in black. The underside is marked with the words ‘IRONSTONE BROADHURST STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND HANDPAINTED UNDERGLAZE COLOUR IS DETERGENT AND DISHWASHER PROOF’.

The side plate is discoid and decorated around the edge with alternating double scrolls and diamonds in black underglaze. The centre has a pattern incorporating these motifs with a combination of an outer ring of small circles with a central orange disc and a ‘cogwheel’ design. This surrounds a further central circular geometric design in green. The underside is marked with the words ‘BROADHURST ENGLAND IRONSTONE A KATHIE WINKLE DESIGN HANDPAINTED UNDERGLAZE COLOUR IS DETERGENT AND DISHWASHER PROOF RENAISSANCE’.

The cup has a height of approximately 7.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.1cm and across the base of about 4.5cm. The saucer has a diameter across the rim of approximately 14.3cm and the side plate has a diameter across the rim of 17.0cm.

They have an unwrapped weight of 610g.

They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, with only very light wear to the centre of the saucer.
