This is a highly attractive vintage jam pot and underplate produced by Thomas Forester & Sons (Ltd).
The jam pot is approximately cylindrical in shape with a thickened base. The lid is approximately domed with a central pointed knop. There is a semi-circular notch out of the rim to allow for the insertion of a spoon. The base colour is cream, over which is applied a dense floral transfer print in gold. This design can also be seen on the matching saucer, which has a slightly upturned rim.
The underside of both the jam pot and the accompanying saucer has a central underglaze logo in black, consisting of a circle with a large capital A in the centre. Around the inner margins of the circle, it reads ‘MADE IN ENGLAND T.F. & S. Ltd’. The mark is that of Thomas Forester & Sons (Ltd) of The Phoenix Works, Longton (part of the Staffordshire Potteries). They were in business from 1883 to 1959 and produced china and earthenware.
The jam pot has a maximum height (including the lid) of approximately 10.8cm and a diameter across the rim of about 8.0cm. The saucer has a diameter across the rim of about 12.9cm.
The set has an unwrapped weight of 290g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor wear to the gilding in places.
