This is a handsome example of an ornate jug or pitcher in the classic ‘copper lustre’ glaze and probably dates to the mid-19th century.
The jug is of a classic form, with a cylindrical upper portion that has a beaded rim and broad spout. The latter is moulded with a ridged, scalloped design. This sits on a tapering globular body and plinth-like base. The handle is of ornate scrolling form. The underside of the base is plain and unmarked.
The inside of the jug is glazed white in the lower portion, and then the remainder of the interior and the majority of the exterior are glazed in a copper lustre finish. There are two bands of pale orange glaze, one around the upper portion and one around the widest part of the globular portion; these are hand-decorated with sprigs and stylised floral motifs.
The jug has a maximum height of approximately 16.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.3cm and across the base of about 9.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 700g.
It is in very good condition, although there is some wear to the floral motifs around the middle of the jug, and there is a minute flake of glaze missing from the tip of the outer scroll on the handle. This is only visible on close inspection and does not detract from the piece.
