This is a striking piece of retro tableware from the ‘Blue Rhapsody’ range by Noritake.
The teapot is circular in cross-section, tapering in towards the base. The rim has two raised lugs with central holes to insert the handle. This is made from metal covered with a layer of cane wrapped around it. The spout is drawn out from the body and extends to the level of the rim. The lid is slightly domed with a central discoid knop.
The whole is made from white porcelain and is transfer-printed with a blue stylised floral motif around the body. This pattern is repeated on the lid, which also has a thin blue line around the edge.
The base is marked in the centre with the words ‘NORITAKE COOK ‘N SERVE CHINA JAPAN 119 BLUE RHAPSODY DETERGENT PROOF’. This mark was introduced in 1961 with the Cook ‘n Serve range.
It has a maximum height (including the handle) of 20.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 16.5cm and across the base of about 9.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 890g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some wear to the surface of the cane, commensurate with use.
