This is a nice example of a bone china cup, saucer, and side plate set (trio) in a classic pattern by Royal Vale, which was a trade name used by Colclough China Ltd.
The cup is of classic form, tapering in towards the base; the latter sits on a discoid foot. It is decorated around the rim, edge of the foot, and edges of the handle with gold stripes. The body is transfer printed with a gilded floral motif, more commonly referred to as ‘gold chintz’. The interior is plain.
The saucer and side plate have scalloped gilded rims. They are also decorated with a transfer-printed gilded floral motif. The saucer is quite worn in the centre and much of the motif has rubbed off within the cup ring.
Some pieces are marked with the crown motif above the words ‘BONE CHINA ROYAL VALE MADE IN ENGLAND A PRODUCT OF RIDGEWAY POTTERIES LTD’. This mark was in use in the 1960s when Colclough and other potteries were part of the Ridgeway Potteries Ltd group.
The cup has a height of approximately 6.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.8cm and across the foot of about 4.5cm. The saucer has a diameter across the rim of about 14.1cm. The side plate has a diameter across the rim of about 16.0cm.
They have an unwrapped weight of 340g.
They are in fair condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is quite some wear to the gilding at the rims and, as previously mentioned, to the centre of each saucer. This wear is reflected in the price. The marks on the underside of the pieces do have minor variations, but they are all marked.
