This is a simple but good-quality example of a large mug produced by Pearsons of Chesterfield.
The mug is cylindrical with a separately applied ridged strap-like handle. It is printed on one side with the words ‘MEN ONLY’. It is otherwise covered in clear glaze.
The underside of the base is unglazed and marked just off-centre with the P logo surrounded by the words ‘PEARSONS OF CHESTERFIELD’. In addition, this surmounts the date ‘1810’ and the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’.
It has a height of approximately 10.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.6cm and across the base of about 10.1cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 550ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 610g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few flaws from the manufacturing process which can be seen in the pictures. There is an underglaze chip out of the edge of the handle and a few tool marks to the edge of the base. There is also a small darker brown fleck under the glaze near the handle. This is expected from mass-manufactured pieces and adds to their rustic charm.
