This is a charming example of a novelty cast iron nutcracker, called ‘The Linton Dog Nut Cracker,’ and likely dating to the 1930s.
The piece is moulded from cast iron and made in two halves that are screwed together. The facial features, fur and feet are nicely moulded.
There is a lever device such that when you move the dog’s tail upwards, the jaw opens to reveal a ridged interior that grips the nut. Pushing the lever back down, therefore, cracks the nut in the dog’s mouth.
The lever is marked with the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ on one side and ’PATENT NO. 273480’.
It has a height of approximately 10.0cm and a maximum length of about 23.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 750g.
It is in good condition and has been lightly cleaned, but without removing the patina that has formed over time.
