This is a highly attractive example of a cream jug and sugar bowl (for coffee) from the iconic ‘Poppy’ range by J & G Meakin.
The cream jug is approximately cylindrical with an extended rim. The handle is attached below the rim and is of angular form. The body is decorated with a stylised transfer printed floral design with open and unopened poppies and ears of wheat, as well as stylised white flowers and foliage. The body steps in at the base; this is marked on the underside in black with the words ‘J G STUDIO J & G MEAKIN ENGLAND’.
The sugar bowl is of short cylindrical form with a stepped base. It is transfer printed with the same design as the cream jug. The base is impressed with the words ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’.
The cream jug has a maximum height of approximately 6.9cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.7cm and across the base of about 5.3cm. The sugar bowl has a height of approximately 5.9cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.8cm and across the base of about 7.0cm.
They have an unwrapped weight of 290g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze commensurate with age.
