This is a simple and rustic example of a beer or cider mug produced by the potter Ray Hoole.
The mug is of classic form, with a slightly everted rim and an elongated body that widens out as it approaches the base. There is a strap-like handle attached to one side. At the lower attachment, it is impressed with the artist’s monogram, consisting of a stylised H and two dots set within a square.
The body has a tenmoku glaze on the interior and exterior, which gives it a mottled black-brown finish with a metallic sheen.
The edge of the base is unglazed, as is the underside. This is incised with the name of the potter ‘RAY HOOLE’.
It has a height of approximately 10.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.8cm and across the base of about 9.3cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 370ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 340g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
