This is a stylish ceramic churn jug produced in the latter half of the 20th century.
The jug is of classic form, with a broad cylindrical body moulded with three circumferential bands. It tapers in from the rounded shoulder towards the vertical rim. There is an elongated pouring spout on one side; on the opposite side of the rim is a D-shaped strap-like handle with a gently curved thumbrest at the edge.
Unlike the standard plain white churn jugs, this piece has two bands of pale blue transfer-printed swagged designs, one on either side of the handle. Directly below the spout, between each transfer-print, is a central large fleur-de-lys motif. This design suggests it may be continental, probably French in origin.
The base is plain and unmarked.
It has a maximum height of approximately 15.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.9cm and across the base of about 12.9cm. It has a maximum width, from the spout to the edge of the handle, of 21.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 670g.
It is in good condition, although there is one very minor chip to the underside of the base, near the lower handle attachment. It is only visible upon close scrutiny but is reflected in the price.
