This is a classic example of a handmade posy vase from the Dunster Pottery, which was founded by George Tonkin Holland in 1959.
The posy is globular in form, tapering inwards towards the base. There is a large central hole at the top, surrounded by a ring of ten smaller holes.
It is decorated with a mottled grey–purple glaze, overlying a very pale blue shade. The design consists of a stylised cockerel on two sides of the posy. Detail has been added by scratching through the outer layer to expose the lighter colour beneath; this method is known as ‘sgraffito’.
The base is incised with the initials ‘GTH’ and the word ‘DUNSTER’. These are the initials of George Tonkin Holland, a member of the famous Fishley Holland family of potters.
It has a height of approximately 8.5cm and a diameter across the base of about 4.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 180g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks
