This is a nice example of a studio pottery storage jar produced by John Eden at Eden Pottery & Son, based in Whitby.
The jar has a flattened rim, a short, cylindrical neck and a broad, rounded body. There are two short twisted lugs, one on either side of the rim. They are pressed into the shoulder with a floral motif in the centre.
The interior and exterior are glazed in a speckled pale grey. There is a pale blue and olive green stripe around the base of the neck, and again above the base of the body. The latter is decorated on the front and back with a stylised foliate motif in pale blue and olive green glaze.
The base is unglazed and unmarked.
I was lucky enough to contact John Eden directly, who confirmed this was a piece produced by Eden Pottery & Son. John and Diana Eden opened the shop in 1990 and were based at The Old Bakehouse, No. 15 Cliff Street, Whitby. They used stoneware acquired from Potclays in Stoke-on-Trent, and remained in business until the early 2000s. They did not mark items, but used paper labels instead.
The lid is of flattened, discoid form, dipping down in the centre where the knop protrudes from. It is also glazed on the top in pale speckled grey.
It has a height (to the rim) of approximately 17.3cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 12.0cm and across the base of about 8.1cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1350g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
