This is a highly attractive and unusual example of a lead crystal fruit bowl produced by Starr Crystal in Stourbridge.
The rim is cut with a band of semicircular facets. The vertical sides are decorated with six repeating panels of eight-pointed stars within cut ovals, connected by linking motifs of cross and vertical cutting. This forms a band of decoration around the circumference of the bowl.
The thickened base has a complicated pattern consisting of a large repeat of the star motif in the side panel, with the spaces between the points being filled by small fans.
The interior of the bowl bears the original paper label, which reads ‘STARR CRYSTAL STOURBRIDGE’.
It has a height of approximately 8.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 15.9cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1010g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some enclosed bubbles and frit that are the results of the manufacturing process. This is only visible on close inspection and does not detract from the piece in any way.
