This milk jug is from the classic ‘Monaco’ suite, designed by Roy Midwinter in 1954.
The rim of the milk jug is in a continuous undulating curve from the spout to the junction with the handle. The body is bulbous, also appearing to be continuous with the curve of the rim. It is glazed in matte black; the underside of the base is white. The centre is transfer-printed with the words ‘STYLECRAFT FASHION TABLEWARE BY MIDWINTER STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND’, contained in a rectangular box.
The Stylecraft ‘Fashion’ shape marked a move towards the organic forms of American ceramics of that time. The plastic quality of the shapes was a conscious break with conventional designs and represented a desire to express Midwinter’s commitment to modern design.
It has a maximum height to the top of the handle of about 11.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 240g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
