Jeannette Glass Company ‘Doric and Pansy’ Design Open Sugar Bowl in Teal or Ultramarine

This is a highly attractive and collectible piece of 1930s American ‘Depression’ glass, from the ‘Doric and Pansy’ range by the Jeannette Glass Company.

The sugar bowl is rounded, tapering in towards the thickened discoid base. Two angular handles extend from the rim to just above the base, which gives the piece a ‘trophy’ like appearance. The piece is decorated on either side of the handles with three circumferential moulded mitres just below the rim. These surmount a band of seven squares; four alternate squares contain a stylised pansy motif, and the remaining three contain a central star with fans radiating to the corners. Below these are two further moulded mitres. The lower half of the bowl is decorated with four panels containing stylised pansies.

The thickened base is moulded with eight lobes surrounding a central pansy motif.

The piece has been made in a vibrant blue-green glass that is commonly described as ‘teal’ or ‘ultramarine’.

The ‘Doric and Pansy’ suite was only produced for two years and is therefore quite sought-after.

It has a height of approximately 8.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 9.5cm and across the base of about 7.0cm. It has a maximum width across the handles of 14.7cm.

It has an unwrapped weight of 280g.

It is in good condition for its age, although there are some minor chips to the moulded grooves below the rim. There is also a minute chip on the edge of the handle, about the size of a pinhead, and on the edge of the base. There are wear and tear scratches to the base, and also some enclosed bubbles and roughened mould lines. This wear is reflected in the price.
