This is a stylish example of a milk jug from the ‘Cassandra’ suite produced by Midwinter and probably dating to the 1960s.
The rim of the milk jug forms a continuous undulating curve from the spout to the junction with the handle. The body is bulbous and appears to be continuous with the curve of the rim. It is glazed all over in turquoise blue.
The centre of the base is transfer-printed with the words ‘MIDWINTER MODERN FASHION SHAPE STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND’.
The Stylecraft ‘Fashion’ shape marked a move towards the organic forms of American ceramics of that time. The plastic quality of the shapes was a conscious break with conventional designs and represented a desire to express Midwinter’s commitment to modern design.
It has a maximum height to the top of the handle of about 10.9cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 250g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
