This is a stunning example of a large handmade stoneware charger or bowl produced by Russell Collins of the Hook Norton Pottery.
The charger has a thick, flattened rim and a capacious bowl. It is glazed in grey and brown shades, with an abstract brushwork motif in the centre. The exterior is also glazed in green-grey, which is pitted with numerous burst bubbles.
The edge of the base is impressed with the letters ‘RC’; this is tricky to make out as the glaze has flooded the impression. This mark is attributable to Russell Collins, who has been potting since the late 1960s.
The charger has a height of approximately 8.0cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 39.2cm and across the base of about 23.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 3530g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
