This is a high-quality lead crystal wine decanter produced by Richardson Glass and dating to the second quarter of the 20th century.
The decanter is mallet-shaped, with a thick, upturned rim that has been polished flat. The neck has been cut with eight elongated petal cuts that extend down onto the shoulder. The body is cut with four large cross-cuts. Between adjacent crosses are three horizontal wedge cuts stacked on one another.
The thickened base is star-cut and marked with a Union Flag and the words ‘RICHARDSON BRITISH’.
The stopper is of solid flattened mushroom form, with a thick discoid top that has been star-cut. The stopper is engraved at the base of the peg with the number ’27’. This corresponds with the number ’27’ engraved on the inside of the neck of the decanter.
In addition, the decanter retains the original yellow and gold sticker, which reads ‘RICHARDSON BRITISH STOURBRIDGE’.
The decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of approximately 23.1cm and a height to the rim of about 19.9cm. It has a diameter across the rim of about 5.1cm and across the base of 10.5cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the shoulder) of 700ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1060g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some wear and tear scratches to the body and base that are commensurate with age and use.
