This is a pair of high-quality cut lead crystal sherry glasses from the ‘Royal Yacht’ suite produced by Thomas Webb.
The elongated tulip-shaped bowl merges imperceptibly with the short tapering stem. The bowl is cut below the rim with a series of six petal-shaped facets that extend down onto the stem, rendering it hexagonal in cross-section.
The foot is plain and marked in the centre with the words ‘WEBB MADE IN ENGLAND’. This particular mark was in use from 1935 until 1949.
Although many other online retailers do not distinguish between the port and sherry glasses from the ‘Royal Yacht’ suite, there is a distinct difference between the two glasses. The sherry glasses are taller and have a more slender bowl, whereas the port glasses are shorter (by about ¼”) with a broader bowl.
Each glass has a height of approximately 11.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.0cm and across the foot of about 5.9cm.
Each glass has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 80ml.
They have an unwrapped weight of 280g.
They are in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some wear and tear scratches to the bowls and feet commensurate with use.
