This is a simple but elegant example of a high-quality cranberry glass jug dating to about 1870.
The jug is approximately cylindrical in shape, widening out towards the thickened base. The rim is plain, with a small pinched spout on the side opposite the handle. The latter is made from thick flint glass and is positioned centrally on the body. It has a thickened lower attachment.
The base of the jug is plain and flat, with a central polished pontil.
It has a height of approximately 18.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 9.7cm and across the base of about 11.7cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to just beneath the spout) of 1200ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 860g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some enclosed bubbles and striations in the glass, which are a result of the manufacturing process. In addition, there are some wear and tear scratches to the body and base that are commensurate with age.
