This is a beautiful example of a high-quality flower vase from the ‘Romany’ suite produced by Dartington Crystal for the V&A Museum from the mid-1990s.
The large vase has an undulating rim with a quatrefoil appearance from above. It then extends down to create the elongated, bulbous body. The whole is made from cranberry glass, which has a twisted ribbed effect.
The thickened base has a central polished pontil. It is unmarked.
The ‘Romany’ range was based on a Victorian idea, whereby the wavy top would allow the flowers to fall into a natural, organic display.
The vase has a maximum height of approximately 23.0cm, with a maximum width across the rim of about 13.5cm and a diameter across the base of about 8.0cm.
According to both the 1995 and 1998 Dartington catalogues, the ‘Teardrop’ vases came in three sizes – Medium, Large, and Extra Large. This vase corresponds to the Extra Large listing, which has a height of 235mm or 9 ¼”.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1220g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a burst bubble containing some frit on the underside of one of the lobes, which is a manufacturing artefact. There are also a few wear and tear scratches to the body commensurate with use. This wear is reflected in the price.
