This is a striking and highly unusual example of a studio pottery bowl, probably dating to the mid-20th century but maker unknown.
The bowl would have been made on a potter’s wheel as a large circular piece, with two sides being folded over to give this highly unusual shape.
The interior has a streaked brown layer, over which has been applied a thick, off-white layer which has a soft, matte finish. This off-white layer is speckled with brown. On two sides of the bowl are eight elongated points of lava-like glaze, which have bubbled and created a textured finish over the brown-streaked layer.
The exterior of the bowl and the plinth-like base are glazed in a dark brown glaze, which has a slightly iridescent finish. The base is unmarked.
It has a maximum height of approximately 10.9cm, with a maximum length of 35.4cm and a maximum width of 25.4cm. The base has a diameter of 16.6cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1630g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is the odd burst bubble and blemish within the glaze, which is to be expected.
