This is a charming example of a souvenir ware marmalade pot by Keele St. Pottery.
The pot is globe-shaped, with a pitted surface, presumably intended to represent orange peel. The lid has a deep circular internal rim to fit the body well. It has a moulded knop in the form of a small orange, which is surrounded by leaves and blossoms moulded in relief. There is a recess in the rim to allow the handle of a spoon to protrude (spoon not included).
The lid bears the remains of a scroll-shaped label in gold and black, which reads ‘CLACTON-ON-SEA’.
The centre of the base is marked with the words ‘KEELE ST. POTTERY CO. LTD’ arranged in a semi-circle around the words ‘MANUFACTURED IN STAFFORDSHIRE ENGLAND’. In addition, it is impressed with the letters ‘KSP’.
The Keele St. Pottery was originally established in about 1915, producing goods destined for the mass market. It was closed for a period during the Second World War but reopened in 1946. In the following year, it expanded its product range to include ornamental ware, cottage ware and other fancies. During this period it acquired several other small Staffordshire potteries. In 1950, the name was changed to Staffordshire Potteries Ltd.
It has a maximum height of approximately 10.4cm and a diameter across the rim of about 8.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 240g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
