This is a charming example of a bud vase, possibly designed by Colin Terris, produced by Caithness Glass in the late 20th century.
The vase has a cylindrical upper portion which tapers out to form a broad teardrop-shaped base. It is made from an inner kingfisher blue coloured glass layer encased in a thick outer layer of clear (flint) glass. This outer layer has been sandblasted with a stylised floral motif.
The base is slightly concave on the underside and is marked with the word ‘CAITHNESS’. In addition, it bears the engraved initials of the sandblaster; I believe this may be ‘CR’ for Carol Robbie.
In addition, the vase bears its original sticker, which reads ‘CAITHNESS HANDMADE IN SCOTLAND’.
This vase features in the 1991 Caithness Glass catalogue under the pattern number CT210 and is referred to as ‘Flower Bud Vase’. Most pieces from the sandblasted range bore the prefix ‘CT’ but not all of them are attributable to Colin Terris.
It has a height of approximately 18.9cm and a diameter across the rim of 3.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 560g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are a few wear and tear scratches to the body and base commensurate with age. There are also some very minor nibbles to the interior of the rim. These are too small to photograph and are only visible upon close scrutiny.
