This is a handsome and simple stoneware vase produced by Dennis Lacey at the Abaty Pottery in Wales.
The vase is of classic form, with a tapering neck that merges with the rounded shoulder. The vase tapers in from the shoulder to the thickened base. The body is decorated with three circumferential bands in brown; one on the base of the neck, one at the widest point of the shoulder, and one above the base. Between the latter two bands are four hand-painted stylised ears of wheat or grasses in a vertical formation. The body then has a layer of clear glaze applied.
The base is unglazed, revealing the underlying stoneware body. It is marked to one side with the words ‘ABATY HAND THROWN STONEWARE WALES’.
It has a height of approximately 22.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 13.2cm and across the base of about 9.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1070g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze at the rim.
