This is a stylish piece of British studio pottery, made by Tony Gant in his Southfield studio in South-West London.
The narrow circular rim forms a short galleried portion. There are two small looped handles attached to this space. The body then widens out to form a broad shoulder; the body is oval in cross-section, and tapers in slightly at the base.
The base is unglazed and impressed at the edge with an oval containing the words ‘TONY GANT LONDON ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from 1970 until 1993.
The body is glazed with a matte grey shade, over which are areas of brown glaze that are speckled over the grey. This almost gives it a greenish hue in some lights. There is an uneven wax resist band around the shoulder, which reveals the stoneware body below.
The piece retains the original cork.
It has a height (excluding the cork) of approximately 22.0cm and a diameter across the rim of about 3.1cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 880g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor wear to the base of the cork.
