This is a handsome and well-proportioned studio pottery jug which I believe was made by Don Morgan.
The jug is of bulbous form, tapering in towards the rim and base. The rim is slightly everted and the spout has been pinched in; you can see the linear tool marks below where it was formed. The interior, rim and top of the handle are all glazed in a speckled greenish-brown. The handle curves down from the rim to rejoin just below the bulbous portion of the body. At this junction, it is impressed with the maker’s monogram, which consists of a chamfered square within which the letters ‘D’ and ‘M’ overlap one another.
This mark has been attributed online to Don Morgan of Hook Green Pottery, based in Lamberhurst in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. Don Morgan was part of the Dartington Pottery Training Workshop in 1978 – read more about this here.
The body is unglazed, revealing the high-fired ceramic body, which is speckled and granular. The edge of the base is angled and the base itself is plain.
It has a height of approximately 15.0cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.5cm and across the base of about 6.2cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 630g.
It is generally in good condition, although there is a flake of glaze out of the rim measuring around 2mm by 1mm. This is only noticeable on close inspection but this damage has been reflected in the price.
