This is a stunning example of a lead crystal square spirit decanter from the ‘Senator’ suite, introduced in 1986 by Stuart Crystal.
The decanter has a galleried rim that tapers in to form a short neck. This is cut with eight facets that taper onto the shoulder. The remainder of the shoulder is decorated with sets of three parallel lines that run along each edge and cross over at the corners. These are overcut by pairs of parallel lines to form a square, the corners of which sit halfway along each set of three lines.
The body of the decanter is approximately square in section with chamfered corners. Each chamfered ‘corner’ is cut with three parallel vertical lines to match the shoulder. Each panel of the body is cut with a horizontal laurel-leaf band, below which is a mitre cut. This surmounts a band of eight vertical fluted cuts.
The base of the decanter is thickened and star-cut in the centre. It is marked at the corner with the word ‘STUART’.
The stopper is of solid multifaceted ball form, tapering into a short solid neck and then widening out again towards the peg. The interior of the neck of the decanter and the peg have been ground to ensure a close fit.
The decanter has a maximum height (including the stopper) of 26.2cm and a height to the rim of 20.0cm. It has a diameter across the rim of 7.6cm and a width across the base of about 10.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 2150g.
It is in good condition apart from one very tiny chip to the flute cutting on one panel of the body. This chip measures 1mm long and I have included a photo. It is hard to see but I mention it for the sake of completion.
