This is a high-quality lead crystal ale or ‘fruit drink’ glass from the ‘Ferndale’ suite, produced by Stuart Crystal in the second quarter of the 20th century.
The elongated bowl tapers in as it approaches the solid stem; the latter is cut with five columns of wedge cuts arranged diagonally.
The bowl is decorated with five elongated matte intaglio fern fronds alternating with five pairs of matte cut spots.
The stem merges with the plain, flat foot. The latter is marked in the centre with the words ‘STUART ENGLAND’. This particular mark was in use between 1926 and 1950.
The ‘Ferndale’ motif is very similar in style to the popular ‘Woodchester’ pattern. It was designed as an ‘inexpensive’ suite by Stuart Crystal and was engraved at Stoniers’ factory. A link to an original ‘Ferndale’ advert can be viewed on Pinterest.
It has a height of approximately 17.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 7.1cm and across the foot of about 7.2cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 315ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 300g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some wear and tear scratches to the bowl commensurate with age and use.
