This is a highly unusual example of a glass bowl produced by Strömbergshyttan and imported by Elfverson & Co. (London) in the 1930s.
The bowl is made from thick pale blue glass with a ‘hooped’ or ringed design. Five circumferential hoops alternate with five flat portions, which can be felt inside and outside the bowl.
The bowl sits on a thickened, discoid base, which has a central polished pontil and is unmarked.
This piece was designed by either Gerda Strömberg or Captain H. J. Dunne Cooke for Strömbergshyttan, and imported by Elfverson & Co of London. Dunne Cooke is named as a Director for Elfverson in the ‘Price List of Swedish Glass’ which is published in ‘The Journal of The Glass Association, Volume 8 – 2008’. The bowl can be seen on page 45 of the journal, under the pattern number ‘E.435’ and I believe is in the colourway named ‘Elfverson Blue’.
It has a height of approximately 13.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 19.0cm and across the base of about 9.0cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1680g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some scratches to the exterior of the bowl, in particular to the base, which are commensurate with use.
