This is a classic example of a ruby glass bud vase produced by Whitefriars in the 1960s and 1970s.
The vase is of tapering form, widening out towards the base. It has a ruby glass core and is encased in a thick layer of flint (clear) glass, which can be seen at the base. The underside of the base is hand-engraved with a collector’s catalogue number.
This piece has the pattern number 9655 and can be seen on page 24 of the 1969 Whitefriars catalogue. There were three sizes produced in this design; this is the smallest.
It has a height of approximately 16.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 2.9cm and across the foot of about 4.3cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 270g.
It is in good condition, although there are some very minor flakes out of the edge of the rim, mainly on the interior. These can be seen in the pictures but are only visible on close scrutiny. This wear is quite common with these pieces but has been reflected in the price.
