This is a nice example of a handmade pottery vase produced by John and David Bishop at the Sheldon Pottery in Clevedon, Bristol.
The vase has a galleried rim, narrowing to form a short neck above a globular body. The interior of the piece is glazed in black. The exterior is glazed in yellow, black, and rust brown in an abstract, marbled effect.
The base is flat and lightly glazed in yellow, although the terracotta-coloured body shows through around the edges and in the centre. It is incised with a stylised pot containing the letter ‘S’, above the words ‘SHELDON POTTERY’.
According to a thread on the website ’20th Century Forum’, the Sheldon Pottery was set up by brothers John and David Bishop, who had previously worked at the Clevedon Pottery under William Fishley Holland.
It has a height of approximately 15.6cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 4.7cm and across the base of about 6.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 420g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is some minor crazing to the glaze.
