This is a high-quality sugar bowl from the ‘Chiltern’ suite, produced by Royal Doulton Crystal in the late 1980s.
The sugar bowl is made from thick lead crystal and has a notched rim. The body is cut with a band of eight large crosses, the upper and lower limbs of which come into close approximation. The diamond-shaped panel formed between adjacent crosses contains an oval-shaped lens cut. The centre of each large cross is surmounted by a seven-pointed fan. This motif sits on a thick circumferential mitre cut.
Above the base, there is a short tapering portion that is decorated with a band of vertical leaf-shaped wedge cuts.
The thickened base is star cut and marked at the edge with the words ‘ROYAL DOULTON ENGLAND’ encircling a central crown logo.
It has a height of approximately 6.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 11.5cm and across the base of about 6.8cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 540g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there is a small piece of frit encased within the glass.
