This is a striking example of a large retro flower vase produced by Martyn Gilchrist at the Bembridge Pottery on the Isle of Wight.
The vase has an everted rim, which narrows in before flaring out as it approaches the base. The handthrown nature of the piece gives it an undulating surface.
The interior and exterior have been glazed in dark brown and a pale beige. This gives a mottled appearance around the four large wax-resist flowers that hang down from the rim. These have been brushed with a terracotta colour.
The base is unglazed and impressed with the Isle of Wight outline, which contains the letter ‘IoW’. This mark was used by Martyn Gilchrist at the Bembridge Pottery, which was active from 1965 to 1984.
The vase has a height of approximately 22.8cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 14.1cm and across the base of about 13.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1530g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
