This is a simple but elegant example of a stoneware tankard or mug produced by A. W. Buchan & Co. Ltd and dating to the mid-20th century.
The tankard is of elegant tapering form, widening out as it approaches the base. There is a moulded ring just above the base. The handle has been applied separately and is strap-like, with vertical lines running down it.
The thickened base is marked with the words ‘BUCHAN PORTOBELLO SCOTLAND FINEST STONEWARE’ and the codes ‘187/20’ and ‘N3’.
The interior has a layer of clear glaze on it, showing the pale beige-yellow body underneath. The exterior is glazed in a thin layer of blue-green, which is patchy at the rim and base. The glaze is thinner at the moulded lines, which gives it nice definition.
It has a height of approximately 12.2cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 8.4cm and across the base of about 10.6cm.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 590ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 630g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although as previously mentioned, the glaze is a little patchy at the rim. There is also a little rough patch on the edge of the base, where the glaze has been rubbed down after firing. This is a manufacturing flaw.
