This is a highly attractive piece of studio pottery by Fenella Fern for Porthleven Pottery near Helston, Cornwall.
The salt pig is of simple form, with a domed body and a bladed knop drawn out at the top. It is glazed on either side of the hole with two stripes in light and dark brown. This is highlighted in a bright orange shade. This technique has been applied around the aperture, with the interior and rim being glazed in pale brown and the edge highlighted in orange.
The base is unglazed and incised with the ‘f’ monogram for Fenella Fern and the word ‘PORTHLEVEN’. Fenella is the daughter of Graham Fern who also made pieces for the Porthleven Pottery.
It has a maximum height to the top of the knop of approximately 13.0cm. The aperture has a diameter of 5.4cm and the base has a diameter of 8.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 560g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
