This is a nice example of a small jug or pitcher from the ‘Bennington’ range produced by Pilgrim Glass.
The pitcher is of classic form and has been mouthblown into an old three-part mould. It has a rounded lower body that narrows as it reaches the waisted neck, flaring out again towards the rim. This has a neatly formed spout opposite the upper attachment of the handle.
The body is made from cranberry-coloured glass and the designs are reminiscent of old Anglo-Irish patterns more frequently seen on cut glass.
The thickened base has a central domed pontil mark.
The flint (clear) glass handle has been separately applied by hand and is crimped at the lower attachment.
It has a height of approximately 11.5cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.9cm and across the base of about 5.5cm. According to the Pilgrim Glass catalogue, this piece has the pattern number ‘1794’ and is referred to as the ‘5″ Pitcher’.
It has an unwrapped weight of 240g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
