This is a stylish example of a utilitarian stoneware jug by Lovatt & Lovatt of Langley Mill, dating to the second quarter of the 20th century.
The jug has a broad, everted rim, which is pinched on one side to form a pouring spout. It has a short tapering section before widening out again at the ovoid body. The exterior of the jug has a horizontal, ringed design. Where the glaze is thinner around the rings, the stone-coloured body shows through. The handle is plain and is attached to the base of the neck, as well as about halfway down the body.
The interior and exterior are glazed in a pale pastel green shade, excluding the base. This is marked off-centre in black with the words ‘STONEWARE LOVATTS ENGLAND’.
It has a height of approximately 20.9cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 12.7cm and across the base of about 9.9cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1240g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although the base rim has been finished crudely.
