This is a classic example of a decorative vase produced by the Nemadji Pottery of Minnesota, USA, and dating to the latter quarter of the 20th century.
The vase has a short galleried rim and a capacious ovoid body. The off-white ceramic body has been fired, unglazed, and then decorated with a marbled effect in white, black, and terracotta. This marbling was achieved by dipping the fired pieces into tubs of water with oil-based enamel paints floated on the surface. The submerged pottery would be rotated upon removal to give the abstract, twisted motifs. This technique means that each piece is unique in its decoration.
The interior is plain and unglazed. Traditionally, these pieces were swirled out with Shellac to seal the interior, but I don’t believe this piece has been. This lack of sealant will mean that the porous clay body will absorb any liquid, and over time, it may seep out. I would therefore recommend using it as a decorative vase rather than a functional piece.
The base is stamped in the centre with a circle containing the words ‘NEMADJI POTTERY INDIAN RIVER HANDMADE USA’ and a central stylised image of an Indigenous American in a canoe.
It has a height of approximately 20.0cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 11.5cm and across the base of about 8.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1150g.
It is in fair condition for its age, although there are two minor chips to the rim (see pictures). This wear is reflected in the price.
