This is a classic example of a ceramic ginger jar sold by the Amoy Canning Corporation with their crystallised ginger during the 1960s.
The ginger jar is globular in shape with a short, galleried rim. The white ceramic body is decorated with blue glaze in a technique similar to negative painting, where the surrounding space is painted rather than the subject. The prunus design is shown in white with the details picked out in blue. There is an inverse crenellated design below the rim.
The rim of the base is unglazed, and the centre is glazed in white. It is unmarked.
The ginger jar retains the original cork, although this is quite worn around the edge. It does not have the original matching blue and white lid.
In addition, the jar retains most of the original paper label on one side, which reads ‘A.C.C. TRADE MARK AMOY CANNING CORP. HONG KONG LTD DRY CRYSTALLISED GINGER WITH POWDERED SUGAR NET 12 OZS MADE IN HONG KONG’.
The jar has a maximum height (including the cork) of 13.4cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 6.4cm and across the base of about 8.7cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 530g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks. There are some minor scratches on the shoulder where the original lid would have sat, but sadly, this is missing. This is reflected in the price.
