This is a nice example of a handmade jug by the Bretby Brick & Stoneware Co. Ltd.
The jug has a thickened base that has been decorated with a ring of circular indentations. The jug flares outwards from the base to the rim. The body has been decorated with some very fine horizontal lines, creating stripes under the glaze. The handle is thick and strap-like and is decorated with fine grooves running from the top to the bottom. These details are picked out in a rust colour.
The whole has been glazed in a pale green shade with details being picked out in rust shades.
The base is unglazed, revealing the underlying ceramic body to be dark stoneware. The jug is impressed in the centre with the word ‘BURTON’ with the letter ‘B’ above it and ‘R’ below it. It looks like it may have been marked twice close together, which is why the mark is hard to discern.
It has a height of approximately 10.1cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 10.4cm and across the base of about 6.7cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 380g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
