20th Century Salt Glazed Stoneware Jug c.1920s-30s

This is a handsome example of a rustic stoneware jug, maker unknown but probably British in origin and dating to the first quarter of the 20th century.

The jug is of classic form, with a short cylindrical neck that is pinched in on one side to form a pouring spout. The neck sits on a baluster-shaped body. There is an incised circumferential line around the middle of the neck and also on the ‘shoulder’ of the body. Above the base is a deep incised circumferential mitre.

Below the rim is a separately applied handle with a vertically ribbed appearance that reattaches halfway down the body.

The upper half of the jug is glazed in a dark brownish-black shade with a metallic finish. The lower half and the interior are glazed in a classic, rich brown shade.

The base is unglazed, revealing the underlying stoneware body. It is unmarked.

It has a height of approximately 18.2cm, with a width across the rim of about 8.7cm and a diameter across the base of about 9.2cm.

It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 1250ml.

It has an unwrapped weight of 950g.

It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
