This is a charming and unusual example of a small flower or spill vase dating to the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries.
The vase has an elongated cylindrical body, which sits on a bulbous capstan-shaped stem and pedestal foot. The piece is hollow down to the inside of the foot. The underside of the foot is plain with a central rough pontil.
The vase is made from clear glass that has been stained with a metal oxide to give a red colour upon reheating. The rim and lower third are stained with ruby pigment. The central portion has a matte, textured finish. It appears there may have been a wax resist used to create smooth areas over which the stag emblem and stylised sprig could be painted. On the reverse is a further stylised floral sprig in ruby.
It has a height of approximately 17.7cm, with a diameter across the rim of about 5.5cm and across the foot of about 6.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 150g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are some inclusions in the glass in the form of enclosed bubbles and pieces of frit.
