This is a superb example of a wine glass from the timeless ‘Thistle’ suite, first produced by Edinburgh & Leith and then continued under the Edinburgh Crystal name.
The capacious bowl has an everted rim that is engraved with two highly detailed thistle and foliage motifs. Below this, the bowl is waisted and cut with thirteen (13) rectangular panels with arched upper margins. A circumferential wedge cut surmounts a broad panel of raised diamonds covering the entire rounded lower portion of the bowl. The base of the bowl is cut with six petals that extend down on the solid tapering stem as facets.
The foot is star cut and marked off-centre with the words ‘EDINBURGH CRYSTAL E & L’. This mark was introduced in 1927 and is known to have been used through the 1930s.
PLEASE NOTE: The ever-popular ‘Thistle’ suite was reimagined towards the end of the 20th century and the original hand-engraved thistle motif was replaced by a machine-made design. This glass is the earlier, hand-engraved version and we strongly recommend that if you are adding to existing stemware you confirm that this is an appropriate match.
The glass has a height of approximately 16.6cm, with a diameter across the rim of 7.3cm and across the foot of the same.
It has a liquid capacity (to the brim) of 255ml.
It has an unwrapped weight of 280g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
