This is a nice example of a posy holder made under the trademark ‘E. Radford’ by H.J. Wood (Ltd) of Alexandra Pottery, Burslem.
The posy is globular and tapers in towards the base. There is a central hole at the top, that is flanked by sixteen smaller holes. The body is decorated with a stripe of pale bluish-lilac on the top and again around the edge of the base. Within the central white panel, there is a pattern consisting of three sprigs of stylised purple flowers and foliage, each alternating with a stylised blue flower and pairs of green spots.
The base is marked with ‘E. RADFORD ENGLAND HANDPAINTED’ in calligraphic form. This particular mark was in use from 1935, although this is probably much later than this. In addition, it is impressed with the pattern number ‘1019’.
It has a height of approximately 7.4cm, with a maximum diameter of about 13.5cm and a diameter across the base of about 8.3cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 340g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although the glaze is crazed in places.
