Dartington Glass Covered Bowl FT19 in Kingfisher Blue c.1967

This is a striking and sought-after covered bowl with pattern number FT19, designed by Frank Thrower for Dartington Glass and introduced in 1967.

The covered bowl comes in two parts.

The lower part is of flattened globular form with a straight, galleried rim. The underside of the base is plain and unmarked.

The lid is domed, stepping into a galleried section that keeps it seated in the base. The domed section of the lid is the same width as the galleried section of the base, so that there is an almost seamless transition. There is a drawn-out handle in the centre of the lid, with a ball knop at the apex.

The piece is made in Kingfisher glass, which was in use until about 1971, when the company moved production into fine tableware with an increased lead content and phased out their coloured glass.

The bowl has a maximum height (including the lid) of approximately 15.4cm.

It has an unwrapped weight of 740g.

It is in fair condition, with a couple of chips to the galleried rim of the lid and the bowl (see pictures). There is also some internal clouding to the bowl and some scratching to the underside of the base. This wear is reflected in the price, but these early pieces are very hard to come by.
