This is a striking and highly unusual example of the classic ‘Horse and Riders’ figure produced by Bitossi for the retailer Sadartis, which was based in Castelsardo, Sardinia.
The piece is crude in style, echoing the charm of primitive pottery. It depicts two riders upon a horse. The whole has been impressed with various circular and floral motifs and incised to give detail to the faces and reins. It has been finished in the scavo glaze, which translates from Italian as ‘excavated’. It has a rough texture and on close inspection, it has a bubble finish like pumice stone. This glaze is mottled with blue in random patches and is therefore described as ‘blue scavo’.
The base is impressed with the words ‘SADARTIS CASTELSARDO’. This mark was used when Bitossi produced pieces for Sadartis between 1982 and 1990. The relationship ended when Sadartis started making the original Bitossi designs in a small factory in Umbria without their permission.
It has a height of approximately 16.7cm, with a maximum length of about 16.2cm and a width across the front feet of about 5.5cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 720g.
It is in excellent condition, with no chips or cracks.
