This is a nice example of a large oval serving dish in Imari colours produced by Alfred Meakin in the 1930s.
The platter is approximately oval in shape and gilded along the rim. The edge of the plate is decorated with a bold transfer-printed pattern consisting of red and blue flowers and stylised foliage. The centre of the plate is plain, although the edge is bevelled and has a trail of beading and a stylised ‘Fleur de Lys’ motif below the floral design.
The base is marked in green with the words ‘ALFRED MEAKIN ENGLAND’. This mark was in use from 1930 to around 1938.
It has a maximum length of approximately 41.5cm and a maximum width of about 33.2cm.
It has an unwrapped weight of 1510g.
It is in good condition, with no chips or cracks, although there are several inclusions in the piece that look like slightly darker spots in the ceramic. There are also some indentations on the reverse of the plate where it stood on a trivet in the kiln during firing. These are manufacturing artefacts.
